Decisions of the Conscience in Crime and Punishment by...

â€Å"Sometimes one cant stand things,† a simple but meaningful quote for Crime and Punishment and Huckleberry Finn. This quote indicates an individuals inability to bare a certain situation. Concerning the novels, the quote displays how the characters cant mentally digest society or crime and how they react. The quote mentioned above was chosen for a couple of reasons. First, the quote plays a crucial roll in both novels that helps with the characters decisions. The decisions that are made are highly influenced by whether or not the character can conscientiously handle the thought of some thought. Thus the characters actions will be effected. Nastasya, his maid, comes in while hes on the sofa and says, â€Å"Youve eaten nothing since yes terday, I warrant. Youve been trudging about all day, and youre shaking with fever.† (Dostoevsky ). Raskolnikovs physical body now shows hes under stress. The constant battle between right and wrong within his conscience, which proves too much for him, effects his body as well. Raskolnikov cannot mentally or physically bare what he has done. Now, throughout Huckleberry Finn, Huck also has thoughts and mental battles that he struggles with. Having been raised as a civilized young man, Huck rebels against that form of living because he does not want to become like the rest of society. He hates the idea of slavery, school, and speaking in a formal manner. He then runs away from his manipulative father, who isnt a true father to Huck, faking his own death. During these actions, Huck is conscientiously at war with lawful and unlawful concerning society standards. In this rebellion, Huck then begins to make his own decisions based off of what he feels to be correct. T hese are results of his disgust for society that have built up while maturing.
